How to apply

Application is possible via the BSIO online application portal only.

The 2017 application round for PhD and MD student positions is currently on; the application tool at https://apply.drs.fu-berlin.de/bsio/ is open for registrations, deadline for submission of applications is APRIL 25, 2017.

The best ranked applicants will be invited for an interview week in Berlin. It will take place on July 3-7, 2017.

Candidates shortlisted for the interview week (including interviews and a presentation on your research interests) in September will be notified until June 10, 2017. As the time span between notification and the interview week might not suffice to get an appointment at the respective German embassy, we kindly ask applicants from outside the European union to book an appointment at their German embassy or consulate for the time frame of early June already (although it is not clear if applicants will be invited to Berlin or not), as past experience has show that it might take quite long to get a visa for Germany.

Travel awards will be provided for the applicants invited to Berlin to cover (part of) their travel expenses.

The following steps are necessary to complete your application:

  1. register with your email address at https://apply.drs.fu-berlin.de/bsio/, after that you will receive an email
  2. confirm the link in that email (the email will also contain your username and password)
  3. log in with your username and password at https://apply.drs.fu-berlin.de/bsio/
  4. fill in your application details (including the contact data of two referees who have agreed to a reference letter for you-we will contact them after you have filled in their email addresses)
» you don’t need to complete your application at once, but you can log off and continue your application later on
  5. submit your application

» your application needs to be complete - including the reference letters - by midnight of April 25, 2017 (German time), otherwise your application cannot be accepted.

What happens after I have submitted my application?

After the application portal has closed, all applications will be evaluated.

The applicants with the best evaluation will be invited for an interview week in Berlin. It will take place on July 3-7, 2017.

Candidates shortlisted for the interview week (including interviews and a presentation on your research interests) on July 3-7, 2017 will be notified until early June 2017.
