FAQs - Application process

Can I apply with a B.Sc. degree (and no M.Sc.)?

You can in principle apply for the BSIO program (biomedical track) with a B.Sc. degree in basic sciences and related subjects if you have obtained excellent grades (that is, your grade is in the top 15 per cent of your grading system), but a M.Sc. remains the standard requirement for application.

Candidates applying with a B.Sc. (and no M.Sc. degree) potentially need to show that they have sufficient experience in biomedical research (e.g. by internships and projects they have done) to pursue a PhD.

I have not received my master's certificate yet - am I eligible for the program?

Yes, you are eligible for the program even if you have not received your master's certificate yet. Candidates who will receive their M.Sc. certificate until November 2018 are encouraged to apply for the BSIO program. In this case, please upload a grade transcript listing the grades obtained in your master's program so far instead of your master's certificate.

Is an English proficiency test mandatory?

Yes, it is, except

  • if you are an English native speaker
  • if more than two years of your education have been entirely in English.

--> If you cannot provide the results of an English proficiency test by the time of the deadline (June 19, 2018), you need to prove that you have registered for a test (such as TOEFL, IELTS or similar). In this case, you have to provide your test results until July 27, 2018.

I am not sure if my referees received the email asking for a reference letter - what can I do?

In the vast majority of cases, sending the link to your referees works perfectly fine, so a technical problem is extremely unlikely.

If your referees should tell you that they have not received the email from us asking to fill in the online reference form, please ask them to check their spam folder as well.

If they still haven't received an email, please contact us using the contact form of this webpage.

We can usually solve the problem by resending the emails containing the links to the online reference form.

In any case, it is very important that you do not submit your application before contacting us (except if you would otherwise miss the deadline on June 19), as we cannot help you if your application has already been submitted.

I get the message "You have already sent an email to the same email address - does this indicate any problem with the referee emails?

No, it does not indicate any problem. The online system uses two mechanisms to send out emails to your referees. First, an email is sent out as soon as you have finished typing in an email address into the respective email field(s). Second, the system can send out an email after you have clicked on "Send email". If the email has been sent after you typed in the email address (which is the standard case), the system tells you after clicking the  "send email" button that an email has already been sent.

FAQs - Interview round

Will my travel expenses be reimbursed if I am intived to Berlin for interviews?

Yes, if you are invited for the interview round in Berlin, you will be awarded a travel grant. These travel grants are graded (150 € [within Germany], 250 € [Europe] and 750 € [outside Europe]).

Do I need to organize my accommodation myself during the interview round?

No. The Berlin School of Integrative Oncology (BSIO) will organize accommodation (usually in double rooms) for all candidates invited to Berlin from September 24-28, 2018 and will also pay for the accommodation.

FAQs - Financing of the program

Does the BSIO provide PhD and MD positions that are paid or do I need to get funding myself?

The BSIO provides several PhD and MD positions per year, these are funded positions, meaning that accepted candidates receive funding by the graduate school; furthermore, the BSIO program does not charge any tuition.

However, candidates can also apply for the program if they already have funding, but seek to be accepted to the program.

Please specify in the application tool if you would like to apply for funding or if you have already obtained funding for your position.
