How to apply

Application is possible via the BSIO online application portal only.

The online tool has been closed and applications are currently evaluated. All applicants will be notified between AUGUST 27 and AUGUST 31 if they are among the candidates invited for the interview week in Berlin on September 24-28, 2018.

Candidates shortlisted for the interview week will be asked to prepare for a panel interview and a presentation on their research interests. As the time span between notification and the interview week might not suffice to get an appointment at the respective German embassy, we kindly ask applicants from outside the European union to book an appointment at their German embassy or consulate for the time frame of early June already (although it is not clear if applicants will be invited to Berlin or not), as past experience has show that it might take quite long to get a visa for Germany.

Travel awards will be provided for the applicants invited to Berlin to cover (part of) their travel expenses.

The following steps are necessary to complete your application:

  1. register with your email address at https://apply.drs.fu-berlin.de/bsio/, after that you will receive an email
  2. confirm the link in that email (the email will also contain your username and password)
  3. log in with your username and password at https://apply.drs.fu-berlin.de/bsio/
  4. fill in your application details (including the contact data of two referees who have agreed to a reference letter for you-we will contact them after you have filled in their email addresses)
» you don’t need to complete your application at once, but you can log off and continue your application later on
  5. submit your application (opening time of the application tool will be announced soon)

What happens after I have submitted my application?

After the application portal has closed, all applications will be evaluated.

The applicants with the best evaluation will be invited for an interview week in Berlin. It will take place on September 24-28, 2018.

Candidates shortlisted for the interview week (including interviews and a presentation on your research interests) on September 24-28, 2018 will be notified until late August 2018. As the time span between notification and the interview week might not suffice to get an appointment at the respective German embassy, we kindly ask applicants from outside the European union to book an appointment at their German embassy or consulate for the time frame of June 2018 (although it is not clear if applicants will be invited to Berlin or not), as past experience has show that it might take quite long to get a visa for Germany.

Travel awards will be provided for applicants invited to Berlin to cover (part of) their travel expenses.
